Many supermarkets in the country offer people over a certain age a percentage discount on the purchase.
Stores typically choose one day a week, known as senior discount day, to make this sale to older shoppers.
Discounts range from 5% to 10% of the total cost of the purchase or apply to certain items.
Save More from Supermarket with Seniors Discounts
Keep in mind that some supermarket chains, like Hy-Vee, Safeway, and Giant, don’t have a senior discount day, but each establishment may offer its discount, so it’s best to check with your store.
Veterans can also save on groceries, as some supermarkets offer similar discounts to those who have served in the Armed Forces. With that in mind, here’s a list of 11 grocery stores across the country that have set up discount days for seniors.
1. Albertsons
Locations: Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, and other central and western states
Age to get the discount: variable
Sale: Senior discounts are being offered at select stores across the country. Customers are advised to contact the store to confirm if it offers any senior discounts.
2. Bashas’
Locations: More than 100 stores in Arizona.
Age to get the discount: 55 years or older
Sale: On the first Wednesday of every month, customers 55 and older receive a 10% discount on the cost of their purchase. Customers are required to use their Thank You Rewards Card to receive the discount. The discount cannot be used to pay for prescription drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, postage stamps, gift cards, Western Union, taxes, fuel, or lottery tickets.
3. Brookshire’s Food & Pharmacy
Locations: Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas
Age to obtain the discount: 60 years or more
Sale: On Tuesdays and Thursdays, customers 60 and older can save 5% off the cost of grocery shopping when they use their Brookshire Thank You Card. Eligible adults must request a discount at checkout. The discount does not apply to milk and other dairy products and several items, such as fuel, tobacco, and prescription drugs.
4. Decicco Family Markets
Locations: New York
Age to get the discount: 62 years or older
Sale: One day a week seniors receive a discount on regular-priced items. Individual stores set the discount percentage and the day of the sale. Customers must have the DeCicco Preferred card to receive the discount.
5. Food Bazaar
Locations: Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York
Age to obtain the discount: variable
Offer: Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 3 pm, seniors receive a 5% discount on the amount of the purchase. The senior discount does not apply to offers included in the weekly circular.
6. Fred Meyer
Locations: Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington
Age to get the discount: 55 years or older
Sale: On the first Tuesday of every month, adults 55 and older receive 10% off select items including private-label groceries, clothing, shoes, accessories, housewares, and most electronics.
7. Harris Teeter

Offer: Every Thursday customers 60 years and older receive a 5% discount on their bill.

Sale: On Wednesdays, seniors 65 and older receive 10% off most items in the store.
10. Tops Markets

Age to obtain the discount: 60 years or more
Sale: On the first Tuesday of every month, customers 60 and older receive a 6% discount on their total grocery bill and out-of-pocket costs for prescription drugs. Customers must enroll in the Tops BonusPlus rewards card to receive the offer.
